The Official Ballet School of Rock City Dance Center
In 2015 Rock City Dance Center announced the newest addition to our dance program offerings - The Official Ballet School of Rock City Dance Center. In it's second year, this conservatory ballet training program provides rigorous training for dancers wanting to pursue professional careers in dance. Dancers are invited to the program via audition and the training focuses on classical technique. The program is under the direction of RCDC Ballet Program Director Mary Beth Tilley with Master Teacher Arleen Sugano.
Ballet School dancers will be selected through an audition. Applicants must be present on announced audition dates to be considered for the program. Dancers will be selected based on technique, commitment, and character. Audition does not guarantee placement. Auditions for the 2016-2017 season will be held on May 7, 2016 and also on August 6, 2016. Dancers should wear black leotard, pink tights with hair securely pulled away from the face in a bun. Ballet slippers and pointe shoes are required.
There are two tracks of study within the ballet program: Preparatory Program for dancers ages 7-10, and the Pre-Professional program for dancers ages 10+. Dancers accepted into the Ballet School will be placed in levels based on skills demonstrated in the audition. The Preparatory Program offers two classes a week with Ballet Arkansas company member Lauren Bodenheimer. The Pre-Professional Program offers technique, pointe and variations classes 4 to 5 days a week. All Ballet School dancers are required to perform annually at the Rock City Dance Center recital in May.
The Official Ballet School of Rock City Dance Center uses the SuganoSystem methodology. What is SuganoSystem Ballet? Simply put, SSB is a contemporary approach and methodology of classical ballet that integrates the ballet vocabulary and artistry with scientific principles (anatomy, kinesiology and physics) to create the most beautiful, effecient ballet movement and classical lines. The SuganoSystem method focuses on reducing the risk of injury and promoting the longevity of the dancer by maintaining the safest dance practices.
